April is Poetry Month

This Friday we'll be partnering with our 8th grade reading buddies to celebrate poetry month. Both classes have practiced some fun poems and want to share them with you. We hope to see you all at 2:30 in the sanctuary!

In our study of the Bible we are learning what Jesus was doing in the days after Easter. Our Bethlehem Buddies will be in on Thursday to teach about the ascension, setting us up to learn about the coming of the Holy Spirit next week.

In reading we'll work on the digraph 'wh', new red words are: who, what. Students will be reading, spelling and writing using these new concepts. We'll also be beginning some writing about our mothers in preparation for our Mother's Day Picnic. We are learning how to identify the main topic in our first sentences and add supporting details in the sentences that follow. Students will continue their practice of counting syllables in words and have a test on it later in the week

Students are using position words in math to show where shapes and objects are in a space. This is a great module for connecting position words to every other subject and daily life. At the end of the week, we'll begin a study of 2 dimensional shapes, and  compare them with the 3D shapes we know.

In art we'll combine position words, primary and secondary colors and 3D sculpture to make 3D rainbows.

We are practicing the music we'll sing to our Mom's at their picnic at music time. Students are learning how to sing in a choir and sing different parts.

At tech time, we'll be reading new books on Tuesday.

Last week we planted our pumpkin seeds in science! Now we are patiently waiting for germination. Students will be learning all about plant anatomy and the pumpkin life cycle as we watch our seeds grow. We'll be recording observations and taking measurements for our science journals over time. This week we'll get in our insects for study. If time allows, we'll introduce these wonderful decomposers to our students. Soon we'll be studying their needs and preferences.

We're excited for a great week of spring weather and seeing growth in nature and all our students.
