This week is our last week before Spring Break and Easter Sunday. We'll be learning what happened to Jesus the days before He died on the cross. Our Bethlehem Buddies will be in on Thursday to help add details to the story. On Tuesday, our 8th graders will meet early with us, because they are leaving soon on their trip to Washington D.C. They have a special egg hunt planned for our class. Later in the week, we'll get to experience a sensory experience through 'stations of the cross'. Here students will have the opportunity to touch and feeling artifacts that make that time come to life. After our break, we'll review and rejoice in what happened on Easter Sunday.
In reading this week, we'll review the digraphs ch and sh in our writing and spelling. Students will learn how to count the syllables in words which will be the foundation for reading and spelling two syllable words. We will write about how the Yakama used to fish for salmon. Students will continue to discuss the difference between expository and narrative texts. We will write topic sentences and supporting details at story time. We'll review the number words that are 'red' words. Friday will be a whole day of literary focus as we have a Read-In and focus on 'The Lorax' by Dr. Seuss.
Students will finish up our module in math on decomposing numbers to ten and take a test. Then we'll learn some new math games that help us practice addition skills. We'll wait till we get back from Spring Break to start the next module.
Social studies continues a focus on WA state and the Yakama Tribal Nation. We will be learning about how cultures change over time, yet maintain traditions. Students will learn about the traditional way the Yakama fish for salmon. We will explore their drum music and dance. Students will compare the story we heard last week with a recent text.
In music we practice worship songs and explore timing, pitch and beat.
This week on technology, we'll be spelling words and identifying vowels.
As the week progresses, we'll be working on art projects that help us celebrate the Easter season and a special Read-In sculpture.
There's a lot going on and it's sure to be a great week of learning and fun!
Mrs. Luoma
