We've been having fun with maps in kindergarten. This week in social studies we'll explore some of the major goods WA state produces and where they are grown or made in our state. Next we'll learn about a local Native American tribal group, the Yakima Tribal Nation. Students will learn about oral storytelling within cultures and listen to a Yakima story about native animals.
At Bible time our class is studying the story of the woman who poured perfume on the feet of Jesus prior to his trip to Jerusalem. This leads up to his last days on earth, just before the cross. We will discuss how many people didn't understand what was about to happen. We'll emphasize how Jesus loves us even in our misunderstanding and reveals His truth at just the right time.
Phonics instruction will cover the digraph 'sh' and students will learn to say and spell the sound correctly. We'll add number words to our red word practice. At story time, students will visualize a story and record their thoughts in pictures. We'll hear expository texts and state the main topic and supporting details. We will be writing number words, our opinions and organizing several sentences to explain a main topic. More and more, we are challenging students to write any word they can think and say using the rules of phonics that we know. Students are expected to reread their work and correct mistakes. Our three goals are: to start every sentence with an uppercase letter, to use finger spaces between words and to always finish a sentence with an appropriate end mark.
In math, we are getting more confident to decompose numbers to ten. This week, we'll get more practice and find missing numbers in equations to ten.
Mrs. Arnold is teaching us some new songs as we look ahead to our special spring events.
In art, we'll learn about the American artist, Keith Haring and practice his playful style.
On our iPads this week, we'll be playing math games.
We can look forward to an extra PE on Friday afternoon! This is a privilege our class earned through the Heart Challenge program.
We hope to see Spring coming this week as we play outside. New growth, new life, for us and the earth.
Mrs. Luoma
