Let's Make the World a Better Place

We'll be talking about Martin Luther King Jr. this week. Students will hear  about he helped our country become a better place for all people. We'll discuss our own ideas on how improve the world and build those ideas into our writing and art projects this week.

In Bible we'll learn the second half of this month's Bible verse and see the contrast between the devil and Jesus. We'll wrap up the story of the Magi and move into stories of Jesus' early life as a boy.

In reading students will practice writing the letter Bb. We'll write lots of words containing both 'b' and 'd'. Students will read stories and write words and sentences. We are beginning to add our own descriptive words to a base sentence, practicing good sentence structure. At story time we'll have the treat of hosting a  (surprise) visiting author, Karen Arnold from Alaska. She will read one of her children's books to the class and teach us about the job of being an author. Later in the week, we'll continue our study of how to compare and contrast different texts using a Venn diagram.

Students will finish module 9 in math and take a test. Anyone struggling to count to 100 or read two digit numbers will get extra practice at learning center time. Next is a chapter on comparing numbers to 10. That gives us lots of good practice using the words: greater, less and equals.

In science, we'll be building our first structures to show force and motion. Students will follow directions to build a ramp with Kinex and learn how a push is a force that can result in motion. We will record the results in our science notebooks and make diagrams of our structures.

Mrs. Arnold will be teaching us some new praise and worship songs. We love how she adds movement to music each week.

In tech lab, we'll support our reading skills with reading books and playing games on Starfall.com

Our art project will be an illustration of our own ideas on how to make the world a better place. Watch the hall gallery for our beautiful creations.

It's a bit shorter week, but we're ready to learn full speed ahead!

Mrs. Luoma
