We hope our class is catching the Christmas spirit as we learn about Advent, make gifts and singing Christmas songs. We talk a lot about the joy of giving and hope all our students understanding giving brings a special joy that's even better than 'getting'.
Our class will practice our December Bible verse and learn more about the role of shepherds in the Christmas story. We'll finish up the story of Zechariah and Elizabeth and move into the story of Joseph and Mary. Students will learn and write about the role angels play as God's messengers.
In reading and writing we'll practice the letter 'k'. Students will learn the 'k' sound is the same as the 'c' sound. I'm excited to teach the special rule that will help us spell correctly when we hear that sound in a word. We'll practice the new red words: get, no. Students will write dictated words and sentences to practice all the letters we've covered. We'll be reading in small groups and with our 8th grade reading buddies. In tech lab we'll be reading and playing games on the computers.
Our class will finish up the short module on writing numbers 6-10. We'll spend some extra time on math a minute fluency drills and start practicing addition and subtraction beyond 5.
In science we'll continue our mini-unit on separating materials and recycling. In social studies we'll review what makes something a need or a want. Next we'll learn learn the difference between consumers and producers.
Our class will practice Christmas music, learning how to stand and take directions from a director as we sing in the choir.
This week in art, we'll combine our math, writing and artistic skills to make fancy numbers in a ten frame with a watercolor wash over the top.
We have lots of Christmas gifts and projects to complete. Our class is excited to make decorations to give others joy.
I hope you are full of the Christmas spirit, too!
Mrs. Luoma
