We're off to a fine start in Kindergarten! Today went so fast, but we learned some of our classroom signals and routines, experienced our first chapel together, played together inside and out, figured out the date and we discussed a funny story about making friends. It was a full and happy morning for all.
Tomorrow we will experience a full school day! Help your child have an early bed time, being your best at school requires a healthy amount of rest and a regular schedule.
This week we will be learning a lot about how to be safe and fair at school. Students will help make the rules for our class. We will take time to understand why we have rules and should follow them. One of the biggest and best skills to work on at school is how to make new friends. In our first few weeks we really emphasize how to be a friend and make a friend. We set the bar high for expecting kind behavior and respect toward all.
In reading we will begin marching through the alphabet with a focus on correct writing and recalling letter sounds. We will be reviewing letters according to their shapes beginning with lines, curves and then diagonals. Our beginning letter will be Ii. At story time the class will learn about characters in a story and the parts of a book. After every three letters, we will have a phonics and writing quiz.
Our first chapter in math covers classifying and sorting objects by multiple attributes. This is a great foundation for recognizing details that are the same or different in things. This builds a skills to recognize similarities and differences in numbers and letters, too.
It will be a fun and important week of learning as we dive into being 'big kids' at school. Your children are already showing us they are up for the challenge. We can't wait to love and learn with these students!
With a thankful heart,
Mrs. Luoma
