It's Looking Like Christmas!

We are all noticing the frosty and snowy weather outside and we are busy inside making lots of Christmas projects.  It just feels good!

This week in Kindergarten we will finish the story of the birth of Jesus at Bible study time.  This same story is brought to life in music as we practice singing for our big Christmas program.  On Friday we'll have our first big K-8 practice in the gym.

In math we will begin the next chapter on numbers 11-20.  Students will learn to decompose these numbers into ten frames and practice understanding place value.

We are finishing the first module in our third unit in reading.  Students are learning to recall and write about story events in order.  We also will practice using a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the two texts we've been studying.  Every other day we learn and practice new sight words, reviewing those we've already covered.  Our focus is on segmenting words that can be read phonetically, identifying the beginning, middle and ending sounds.

We will finish our unit in science on engineering, materials and recycling by making new recycled paper from the scraps from our class.  Hopefully each student has a new interest to reuse, reduce and recycle at school and at home.  We'll have time to add a STEM project based on a Christmas story and build creative traps for run a way cookies.

Learning center time is progressing to often have a student led center each day.  This helps students practice leadership.

The learning never ends.  It is always growing and new and fun.

Thank you for growing with your child,

Mrs. Luoma
