We had a good first week and now our class is ready to move head!
In Bible, we'll start at the beginning and learn about the Creation. Students will study the sequence of God's work. We'll begin learning some American Sign Language signs to help us remember our Bible verse and have our first memory quiz on Friday.
We'll add glue sticks and math books to our school supplies that we store in our desks. Our first module or chapter in math covers understanding counting and matching groups. The content is easy for most which helps us to focus on listening skills and following directions.
In reading and writing we'll focus on letters 'm' and 'a' this week. You'll see us working through the alphabet this trimester with a emphasis on rapid sound recall and good letter writing skills. Students will learn to form upper and lower case letters using three lines to make their letters the correct size and shape. We'll learn the parts of a book at story time with a fun song. Students will match upper and lowercase letters.
We work a lot on good fine motor skills early on. You student will have weekly practice using scissors, tracing and writing accurately.
In social studies we will continue learning about how to become a kind and safe community of learners at school. We will teach, review and role play rules for the classroom and playground. We often go on school tours so students understand the layout of the building and what different spaces are called. Our class is earning 'bear' tokens when they follow directions as a class successfully. This week, we'll begin giving out 'jewels' both large and small to reward individual students who are choosing to do the right thing. Every student will start a jewel collection they will add to all year long.
This week in music, Mrs. Arnold will combine what we're learning from the Bible with the song, 'It's a Wonderful World'.
In art we'll finish our focus on line drawings by exploring a couple more beloved Mo Willem's characters: Piggy and Snake. Look for our amazing artwork in our hallway galleries!
We'll begin our first science unit on 'Weather and Sky' by finding out what our students already know and what they want to learn. We'll fill out a chart that will help document our progress.
Students will be introduced to our classroom iPads on Tuesday. Partners will practice writing skills on a fun app.
Everyday we plan in lots of movement and playtime to release energy and work on social skills.
Thank you for helping your student get the rest the need and come prepared to school. We're really happy with our strong start.
We love your kids, they're doing great!
Mrs. Luoma
