This week in Kindergarten, our class will be busy getting ready to celebrate our moms. On Friday, at the end of the school day, we'll be parading out to have a picnic with our moms. For all of us, our moms are such important people. Our class is excited to do something special to honor them.
At Bible time this week, we'll start practicing our new Bible verse for May and June. Every month, students learn American Sign Language signals for many of the words. We'll be practicing our chapel play each day, learning patience, timing and expression.
In reading, we'll switch from digraphs to consonant letter blends. This week the focus will be on 'r' blends. New sight words are: water, been, find. Our new reader is: 'Jim and Kim'. We will write an informational piece and finish up writing about our moms. Students will begin a new unit where the passage of time is highlighted. We will write to show comprehension and good sentence structure as we answer questions from the text.
In tech lab, we'll play a fun game with a friend making words using 'r' blends.
We'll finish up our math module on comparing 2D and 3D shapes on Wednesday. Students will make larger shapes from smaller ones. Then we'll begin a new module on numbers 10-20, where place value is the focus.
Students will make one last observation on their pumpkin plants and then they'll be sent home (they're getting too big)! We will learn more about the plant life cycle, so we know what to look forward to in the fall. Our Bess beetles will show us some of their preferences in the experiments we have set up for the week. Students will make predictions and then test them using our beetles.
In music, we are singing a fun song about a sailor going to sea and using percussion instruments. We'll compose a piece using an array of interesting sounds.
Our art lesson is about the famous painter, Vincent van Gogh. We'll study his paintings about sunflowers and create our own pieces in the van Gogh style.
I'm hoping for sunshine on Friday for our picnic and a great week of learning and fun.
Mrs. Luoma
