Oh, boy, are we feeling the joy of Christmas! Everyone has lots to share, make, sing and look forward to during this busy week in Kindergarten. I hope you are feeling the joy at home. Slow down, do less and focus on more ways to be thankful as you prepare for the holidays.
In our study of God's word, we will focus on the Christmas story this week and how Mary came to know she would have a very special son. Angels again, play an important roll as messengers from God. We'll be lighting the second candle of Advent and discuss how this is a time to prepare our hearts for Jesus.
In reading we are practicing beginning and end sounds. Our new sight words are: can, with, look. The new home reader is: 'Tim the Pig'. We will study the book 'The Snowy Day' and write to show our comprehension skills. Students will showcase their writing by explaining part of the Christmas story.
In math, we'll finish up an important module on adding and subtracting from word problems. Our students are doing a wonderful job of understanding and showing their work through accurate equations. One our biggest challenges is learning how to really listen to directions during a test to show what we know on paper.
Our class will learn about consumers and producers in social studies. It's a great time of year for that as there are SO many consumers out shopping. Next, we will become producers and tackle a STEM project where students create Christmas trees out of items from our Lil' Lowes store. We recently read 'Mosseltoe' by Margie Palantini where a very funny moose forgot to buy his family a Christmas tree so he became the tree. Watch for some funny photos of our projects on Seesaw!
In tech lab we will practice addition and subtraction skills, then create cool cookies.
Students will learn the legend of the Poinsettia flower and how it relates to the Hispanic culture. We will create beautiful flower prints to celebrate the season as our art project for the week.
We are singing A LOT as we practice for the Christmas program coming up next Thursday. This week many students will dress up for some still life photos to go along with our scripture readers.
It's sure to be a busy and joy filled week in Kindergarten!
Mrs. Luoma
