Hello Advent Season!

There's excitement in the air as we begin the Advent season and prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus.  We will be very busy at school getting ready for our big Christmas program, learning Christmas stories from the Bible and making gifts.  We hope to keep the focus on Jesus and giving.  I pray you have time to slow down and enjoy the simple things as you build holiday memories in your family.

We will learn more about the role of angels in the stories of Zechariah and Elizabeth.  On Tuesday our Bethlehem Buddies will be telling the story in depth with their small groups and praying for each child.  Everyone is interested in learning more about Jesus' cousin John in the future.

In reading students will focus on identifying first and last sounds in words.  Our new sight words are: me, be, see.  Our new reader is: Rin the Rat. We will write about angels for our wall display.  As we read an anchor text on changing weather, students will learn new vocabulary and write to show comprehension.  At story time we will identify major events in a text and list the sequence of events in a story.

In math, we will start a new module on addition and subtraction where students learn to draw their own sketch based on a word problem and then solve for an answer.

This week in social studies we will define and discuss the differences between needs and wants.  In science, students will study why lightening storms form.  We will play with static electricity in the classroom showing how items with opposite charges repel each other.

In tech lab students will explore the keyboard and practice careful typing skills.

We'll be making lots of gifts and decorations for Christmas.  Friday art will be about making a special star using a mixture of materials.

Students are singing along with our Christmas songs for the programs every chance we get.  Our big group practices are sounding better and better!

I hope your week is full of Christmas joy,

Mrs. Luoma
