Planting Seeds

This week our class will be planting pumpkin seeds as a model to learn about living things in science.  I think God made us all gardeners of some sort at heart.  People love to watch something grow and produce.  This is a great time of year to pray and wonder at the process of growth: in plants and in people.  It's a joy to see how well our class is growing up and growing more confident.

In Bible this week we will finish a story about how many of Jesus' disciples saw him just after the resurrection.  Next we'll learn about the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. This will compliment our April Bible verse about spiritual gifts.  We are encouraging our class to put their gifts to use helping others. You won't want to miss this week's online chapel, where our class is teaching about spiritual gifts!

We will finish our study on letter digraphs by adding wh, and kn to our set.  Students will read and write words containing digraphs.  Our new sight words are: should, come, some. We will write about our opinions comparing two texts we have studied.  Students will express an opinion and give two reasons for their thinking.  At the end of the week, we'll begin studying two new expository books on plants.  I'm excited at how well it will compliment what we are learning in science as we grow plants from seeds.

In math, we will continue to challenge students to dive deeper in understanding addition.  Students will add larger groups using objects and pictures, being careful to check their work on each problem.

We will define the difference between goods and services in our community in social studies.  Students will draw and write about what good and service they would like to sell in the future.

In science we'll learn about the anatomy of a seed.  Students will carefully observe and plant their own seeds.  We will discuss the needs of a germinating seed and try to give our seeds the best environment to grow.

Last week we got into the computer lab for the first time and it was so exciting!  Students learned the parts of a computer and practiced the skill of using a mouse correctly.  This week we will play a sight word learning game.

In art, we'll study the style of Chihuly and make some beautiful glass-like sculptures.

It will be a fine week of learning and enjoying the spring sunshine!
