Honoring Heroes

We love to teach about heroes!  We see heroes in the Bible, in our nation's history, in our communities, in our school and in our families.  Superheroes are fictional characters, but real heroes exist all around us.  Each one of us is a hero when we stand up for what is right, protect the weak or show compassion for the hurting.  This week in Kindergarten we'll learn more about national heroes and write about one of our favorite heroes.

In Bible we will finish the story of Jesus being left at the temple as a boy.  We hope all our students can be teachers of truth throughout their lives, just like Jesus.

We will focus on the short vowel 'u' in reading.  New sight words are numbers this week: one, two, five.  Students will finish up unit 3 in reading and compose a written expository paper about a weather forecast. At story time, students will identify genre each day.

In math, we will practice careful counting and number order using numbers to 20.  We'll finish up chapter 6 with a test on Friday.

With our new science kit in the room, each student has their own set of Kinex for building a variety of projects that demonstrate forces and motion.  This week we'll be building ramps and observing the force of gravity and friction on balls as they roll.  Students will build, predict, observe and record their findings.

Students are making a January calendar in social studies, noting MLKJr. Day as a national holiday.  It will serve as great practice for number writing and understanding days of the week.

We're looking forward to a good week after the long weekend.  Nothing is more fun than watching your kids learn!
