We practice hearing and identifying vowel sounds in words every day in Kindergarten. Our class is making great progress in hearing multiple sounds in words, and beginning to write words phonetically as we write. These are exciting times as we see everyone growing into independent readers and writers.
As we study the Bible this week we will wrap up the story of the Magi and move on to learning about the early, family life of Jesus. It's good to realize he was a real boy who experienced all the same joys and trials growing up just as our students.
In reading, our focus will be on the short vowel 'o' this week. Say, 'ahhh' and hear those 'o's'! Students will learn the new sight words: here, where, what. We will finish our study of an expository text on weather, answering questions based on factual details from the book.
Our class will be ordering and comparing numbers 10-20 in math. We will practice using ten frames to emphasize place value and help us identify numbers.
We will study how national celebrations often honor political and social heroes. Our focus will be on Martin Luther King Jr. as we will celebrate his contributions this month. Students will write about heroes for our writing wall.
New science kits are scheduled for delivery this week, which means we should be starting a fun unit on physics called, 'Push, Pull, Go'. Students will organize their building materials and begin building structures that will demonstrate different forces.
Last week in art we mixed colors, this week we will pair that with learning to read color words. In art, we have a cool project to illustrate how each student dreams of making the world a better place...showing we can all be positive leaders for change.
We're looking forward to a great week of fun and learning.
We love your kids!
Mrs. Luoma
