Happy 2021!

It's a new year and we're hopeful it will be a safer one where we can stay in school and even get back to 'normal' soon. Mrs. DeGraaf and I have missed our class and we're excited to get a fresh start together after the Christmas break.

Students will notice some exciting changes in our classroom and with our materials.  We have a new seating arrangement to enjoy.  In our desks, we'll have new, standard size pencils, new crayons and Play doh.  We're getting older and we're ready for new things!

This week in Kindergarten we will study the story of the Magi searching for the Savior. This will put into context the first years of Jesus life and how God protected Him from danger.

In reading we will study the short vowel 'i'. Students will get a week of reviewing past sight words with a review quiz on Friday.  We will analyze an expository text about weather forecasting, answering questions based on our reading.  We get to start our own personal writing journals.  Students will learn how to keep a neat journal and express themselves through words.  We will use these journals often as the year progresses and students can continue the practice through the summer.

We will begin a new chapter in math on using numbers to 20.  This will help us focus on understanding the tens and ones place value, and how to read and write larger numbers.  Students will practice careful counting by ones and tens, counting on and how to decompose two digit numbers into tens and ones. As we keep track of the date on the calendar, we'll be adding the year now and heading our papers with our names and the date each day.

In social studies we will begin a new unit on understanding the importance of national celebrations and what makes a hero. Students will understand the important role past presidents have played in our nation's history.

We will start our study of motion and force in science. This will cover concepts in physics and design.  We'll be having fun building models that demonstrate specific forces.

Our art project of the week is on the colors of the rainbow as Mrs. DeGraaf introduces our friend ROY G. BIV.

A busy and fun week is ahead of us!

Mrs. Luoma
