We are Elves

We've been just like elves in Kindergarten lately, working on lots of different Christmas projects.  This week we'll keep up our busy pace and finish up many gifts and decorations.  We're trying to keep the joy of the season the focus in our class and emphasize the joy of giving.

As we study the Bible this week, we'll learn about the birth of John and go on to the story of Mary and Joseph. We love all the angels God uses to tell His news!  We have decided that angels are well worth listening to and obeying.

In reading we'll cover the sight words: you, will, got.  Short 'a' and 'e' are the vowel stars of this week.  We are studying a narrative story in depth and writing to respond to questions, using good sentence structure and handwriting.  At story time, we are identifying specific story details.

We will spend a week practicing our graphing skills in math, showing how data can be organized in meaningful ways.  Students will learn how to take a survey to collect data.

In social studies our map making understanding is growing.  Students will add details to a map of Washington state, using a legend to identify specific details.

After learning that paper can float last week, we'll compare many different materials to see what things sink or float in science. Students will make predictions and test to sort materials.  We'll use the story of the Gingerbread Man to study sequence, details and apply science skills to make boats that could help a cookie cross a river.  We'll also map the path the cookie ran to apply our map making skills.

In art we'll make beautiful snowmen from an interesting perspective.

It's sure to be a busy and festive week.

With a joyful heart,

Mrs. Luoma
