This week the calendar and the seasons will turn and we'll say hello to a cold December. It's a short school month, but we'll be packing lots in to combine learning and Christmas fun.
Our first Bible story to start us off in the season of Advent is about God's plan for the birth of John from Zechariah and Elizabeth. We'll be learning about the important part angels play in communicating God's messages to people. This week the purple Advent candle of hope will be lit to symbolize how Jesus brings hope to the world.
In reading and writing we will cover the sight words: can, with, look. We will focus on short vowel sounds, listening for the medial sound in three letter words. Daily, we practice identifying the initial, medial and ending sound in words. This helps us to start spelling words phonetically. As students listen to a text, we are transitioning from orally answering comprehension questions to writing our answers using good handwriting and sentence structure. We'll be studying several narrative books this week and identifying story events and details.
Our new math chapter covers how to make and read graphs. Students will learn to organize data onto a graph and quickly make comparisons.
In social studies we'll begin a new unit on maps. We'll learn what a legend is and how to use it to understand a map. Students will practice their map making skills by making a map of our classroom and the playground.
Students will observe and record the results of our paper recycling experiment. Everyone will get to take home a small piece of the paper we remade from scraps from our classroom. We will extend our thinking by watching paper flowers open when floating on water. Students will predict what weights of paper will open faster and why.
In art we'll be hoping for winter snow by using our scissor skills to decorate our classroom with paper snowflakes.
Students will be busy with several Christmas projects to give as gifts and decorate for the holidays. And of course, we'll be playing Christmas tunes!
Praying you all stay well and see the joy of Advent,
Mrs. Luoma
