After a strange and smoky week, we're really thankful for what looks like clear weather and full days of learning together at school.
Did we lose time? Not really, every year we have school days cancelled for dangerous weather. We know how to get back on schedule and not miss a beat. We'll be just fine.
What's up for this week? In Bible we'll learn more about The Creation story. Each day we take time to thank God for His amazing creation and plan. Last Friday we challenged students to seek ways to apply the verse we've been memorizing and serve others at home. We can't wait to hear an update!
In reading and writing we are beginning to review each letter, sound and how to print them properly. We have practiced all the basic strokes of good printing, now we're ready to put them together. This week we'll cover letters Ll, Ii and Tt. On Friday we'll have a phonics and writing quiz. We approach reading and writing skills together throughout the year. This first trimester we cover many foundational skills so the whole class is ready and able to take off in reading and writing together. At story time, we will learn the parts of a book and several concepts of print. Students will practice recalling the beginning, middle and end of a story.
Our class will finish up Chapter 1 in math, practicing careful one to one counting and comparing. The concepts are easy, and this helps us focus on the new skills of working together and independently at math, recalling math vocabulary and following multiple directions to complete a written test. In Kindergarten, a lot of learning is learning how to follow directions and show what we know.
This will be a great week to make some progress in our science unit on Weather and Sky since we'll see some 'normal' weather instead of smoke. Students will learn weather vocabulary, types of weather and begin our first experiment where we measure the temperature in the sun and shade.
In social studies we will focus on what being a good citizen means. We will learn about practical ways to be a good citizen at school and home.
Our art lesson will be on understanding the use of line and pattern. Patterns relate to words, speech, music, math and nature. It's so cool!
Trusting God for a great week!
Mrs. Luoma
