Our ability to read is expanding as we learn more and more about the sounds letters can make in a word. Our focus this week is on reading words with short and long 'e' sounds. Students will become confident letter detectives, looking for vowel patterns in words. We will be learning to identify the main point and list facts from expository texts. Students will be writing their own informational piece about the weather.
Each student will start their own writing journal and we will add a journaling time to our schedule each week.
This week we will compare and contrast 2D and 3D geometric figures in math. Students are counting sides and corners to define shapes. We will form shapes with various manipulatives during center time.
We will finish the Bible story of the Magi and move into learning about Jesus as he grew up in his family. It's amazing to think Jesus experienced all the same things our Kindergarten students do: he lost teeth, had birthdays, learned about God and life from his parents and teachers.
In science and social studies we are learning how to make rules to sort living things from non-living things. Students will explain what living things need to live, then we will discuss the differences of wants and needs.
Martin Luther King Jr. day is approaching and the class will study the brave contributions of this man. We will dream of how to make the world a better place and express our vision in a special art project.
Kindergarten students love learning! It will be a good week.
