Plants and life

Today we heard why our students think plants are important to our lives and world.  We had many great answers and it's so much fun to see them want to learn more.  We began learning about the plant life cycle in science, specifically the bean life cycle.  This foundation will set up future learning where we will grow and experiment with beans next week.
This morning we had fun learning about the season of Lent from our 7th grade class in chapel.  It caused us to want to give up things to help others.
We noticed the rain this morning and spent some focused time writing in our journals about weather.
Today was our last and most challenging day practicing subtraction word problems.  Students are expected to move through several steps to show their thinking and write complete answers.
We began a new unit in reading today.  It is on plants and will provide many cross-cutting connections as we also learn about plants in science.  Today we read the book 'The Tiny Seed' and wrote sentences in response to the text.  This unit the writing focus is on opinion writing.  Be prepared to give your opinion at home, because you're sure to be asked.  We discussed how we should all listen to and respect that everyone has a right to their own opinion.
At story time we heard a funny book about bringing pets to a library, then formed opinions and backed them up with reasons.
At learning centers we played a sight word swatting game, printed our last names in play doh, built with paper, blocks and rubber bands.  Sounds like fun, doesn't it!?

We love your bright and beautiful children,

Mrs. Luoma
