Becoming Comfortable

It's a joy to see our class becoming more comfortable with our routines and procedures. As we ease into understanding our schedule and expectations, our class is becoming more and more efficient and confident.

This will be our first full week of school, so I anticipate getting a lot of learning and fun in everyday.

We will continue learning about how God created different parts of our world in a specific order at Bible time. Students will practice saying our full September Bible verse to get ready for our quiz on Friday.

In phonics and writing, we'll learn how to review and take our first quiz over the letters Mm, Aa, Dd. Then it's onward to our next set of letters: Tt, Pp and Jj. You'll see our class in this pattern until we finish our review of the alphabet. We'll be writing our first sentence in writing. It will be up for display at Open House on Thursday! At story time we'll finish reviewing concepts of print and parts of a book t and move on to understand what characters are in a story.

We'll finish our first module in math on representing numbers 0-5, and take the module test. Students are learning to listen and show what they know on paper. Our class will begin the next module, where we learn how to write numbers correctly to 5.

In social studies, students are suggesting classroom rules that will keep everyone safe and learning. We organize their ideas into a chart and add pictures to help define expectation. Our class will begin earning points for our first character word: unity. Students will learn what unity means and how to show it in the classroom. Color groups will compete for points by showing unity in their group. Groups compete for a prize, then we'll start over at the next seating change.

We'll begin our first big science unit on Weather and Sky on Thursday. Students will observe the sky and work in their color groups to complete a chart comparing and contrasting the day time sky with the night time sky.

In art we'll base our project on the book, The Dot. Students will learn to have confidence in creating through making a crayon/watercolor piece based on their idea of a dot.

Mrs. Arnold will have our class moving and making music to the beat of a fun song in music this week.

We'll visit the BLS library this for the first time. Students will learn how to behave in the library, browse and check out their first book. In class, we'll practice using our headphones with iPads as we practice skills on an alphabet app.

Other 'firsts' for this week: we'll learn why we have fire drills and how to do one, and we'll meet and read with our 8th grade reading buddies!

On Thursday, we hope to see all our families at the first BLS Open House and Ice Cream Social. Come in and visit the classroom from 6-6:30 and view our latest projects. Then move outside to visit, play and eat ice cream! It's lots of fun and a great time to connect with your student's teachers and other BL families.

We are having fun and enjoying your sweet kids!

Mrs. Luoma
