National Lutheran School's Week is Here!

Everyone's been anticipating this big week all month and now it's here!  NLSW is a happy, crazy, fun week of celebrating excellence in education as we strive to nurture the whole child physically, spiritually, emotionally, and academically at our school.  We join all the other Lutheran schools nation wide by having a week of showing school spirit and service to others.  Check out my Sunday email, the NewsSlice, past information sheets or the important dates on this blog or daily details about how your student can dress up this week and fully participate.

We'll also be moving forward in learning each day as we have fun.

In Bible, we'll learn about the start of Jesus ministry on earth and how he began choosing his disciples.  We'll discuss how we all can be present day disciples when we love and follow Jesus.

In reading we'll move ahead with the sight words: one, two, five.  Note the quiz is on Thursday this week, because of Indoor Olympics on Friday.  Our new reader is "Lad and Me".  Our class will study the short vowel 'u' this week, read and write word families using this vowel.  Students will listen and write to show comprehension from our anchor text about a character who contrasts her experiences with her Grandparents.  We will encourage local nurses by writing thank you notes to them this week.

In tech lab, we're getting extra practice understanding vowel sounds and reading stories that feature short 'o' and 'u'.

Students will finish our module on writing, counting and ordering numbers to 10 this week and take a test to show what they know.  Our next module is on counting to 100 by ones and tens.  Start practicing at home!  Students will learn how to count, write and read numbers to 100, noting the tens and one's place value.  This will set us up well for Day 100 of school which is coming up in February.

In music we are singing and using percussion to understand beat.  This week students will perform and compose music using loud and soft beats and silence.

Last week we did an inventory of building materials from our new science kit on force and motion.  This week we start building and experimenting with balls on our structures.  Students will learn what forces and motion are, and how changing the strength of a force affects motion.  We're making a cool science notebook for this unit that students will take home when we're done.

Friday is Indoor Olympics and an early release day at BLS!  It's a half-day of crazy fun, learning, teamwork and smiles.  Remember to have your child dress in orange and navy!

Thank you for all the ways you support you're child's learning at home,

Mrs. Luoma
