What is the weather?

This is the question our class will be answering in science this week. We will learn how to define what the weather is like, why knowing the weather is important and how weather scientists help keep us informed and safe.

In Bible this week, we'll hear about some really bad weather that caused the flood. Students will see how God protected and provided for His creation and why Noah was chosen for a very important job.

As we wrap up understanding the reason for rules at school, we'll start taking a look at the various jobs different people have in our building in social studies. Students will tour the west wing and interview some of our staff to understand more about their jobs.

In reading and writing this week we'll add 'Hh' to our letter name, sound and handwriting skills. Students are learning to practice matching upper and lower case letter pairs, and letter sounds by playing several games. We have introduced red words (sight word or high frequency words) which students are learning to recognize and read by sight and to spell. We will cover words: the, was, is and a this week. We play lots of whole group and small group games to practice red words. Students will practice writing a sentence where they apply letter sound and handwriting skills. We'll take our first dictation quiz on Friday. Students will hear and spell sounds and words on their own. At story time, we'll do a review of the parts of a book and practice identifying characters and setting from a text.

Students will finish their practice on writing numbers 0-5 in math. We will put numbers in order and practice counting and writing forward and back from a given number. On Friday, we'll take our second test. Students are learning to listen and follow directions to complete a test.

Mrs. Arnold will add a fun song to our music time to help us review our recent Bible stories on the creation and the flood.

In art we'll design visual art with a painting on the colors of the rainbow, remembering the promise God made with a rainbow after the flood. We'll relate rainbows to weather, learning we need light and water in the air to form one.

On Thursday, we'll see our 8th grade reading buddies for the second time. Students will decorate clouds and raindrops which will be floating from our ceiling soon.

On Friday, before we leave for the weekend, we'll gather for a Fall Fest assembly to learn about why we have Fall Fest and how students can earn special prizes.

Throughout the week, I'll be completing some important individual assessments on each student. Every student will spend a few minutes in the hallway with me and then return to class with a treat.

Fall is coming and we have a wonderful full week ahead. We are so proud of all the progress we see our class making.

Blessings,

Mrs. Luoma
